Hotel Riu Funana - All Inclusive

Santa Maria

Got changed from the Sol Dunas to the RIU Funana due to renovation works. Wasn’t disappointed. Large hotel and going for New Year we knew it would be busy. All inclusive food was very good. If you couldn’t find anything to eat something wrong with you. No one in our party of 4 had any tummy troubles. Location great 20 minute walk in to Santa Maria. Entertainment was excellent and the White Party was amazing. The Asian restaurant (book in advance) was really good. Had a fab day tour with Zi Tours a lot cheaper than TUI and a brilliant day out. The only negatives and they are minor was the condition of the sun beds they are tired cramped and uncomfortable. Overall well worth a visit. Oh and the staff are great too very attentive.

Excellent hotel

I cannot believe the reviews on here and I have checked its the same hotel !
   Went on Dec 23 never been so went for a change.
   Front of hotel and maybe foyer are 5 * that's your lot . Tui call it traditional think that's estate agent talk for dated.
      It wont be the worst hotel you have been in Food is decent, but its like a soup kitchen queuing for everything .
       3 Special restaurants 'only one has service other 2 is fetch your own .
Service is shocking ,cocktails are pre made ,drinks very poor.
Its like a UK caravan park without the static vans.
     No waiter service, Sunbeds are broken, no cushions, mould in bathroom ,you have to plug kettle in on the floor.
          To be fair the kettle on the floor isn't really a issue because they only gave us coffee and milk 3 out of 7 days(asked 3 times one day gave up in the end ). 
     None off the above is really a issue but this is meant to be 5 *. 
         Now the positives wont keep you long  :-)

 Weather is Hot
Beach is decent.
Town is perfectly safe to walk to and some nice bars etc.
Guy selling trips on the way to beach are fine just talk to one take his card and the rest will leave you alone all week .
               

Not 5 Star

Such a lovely spacious site with the building low rise and nicely spread out. My mum has bad knees so we requested a ground floor room. The rooms are a good site with a nice little patio or balcony to sit on.  The pool is near by and the beach is a little walk away but has a bar there. The main village was a 30 min pleasant walk away and had a range of bars with sea views.  The restaurants on site serve a range of food and understand allergies well with food labelled, very useful for a celiac.  The Christmas gala dinner was amazing.

Lovely holiday in the sun off the beaten track.

Good bits first, most of it's good to be fair.
Check in was fast and easy, pre check in on the App is best if you can, other tip is jump in a Taxi outside airport it's €20, we were in the pool before the bus arrived.
Room, ours was great, in block 9 on lower floor, few reviews say it's dated ect but ours was all good.
Staff, brilliant, bar, restaurant and the entertainment all friendly, beach bar staff not so much but I will get to that bit.
Food, brilliant! Loads of fish, meats ect ect, salads, fruit, loads of cheese and breads all good. We used one of the bookable restaurants and to be fair it was ok but all the food we had was good in main buffet, as with all these types of hotels the main buffet can be busy, people piling every type of food on one plate and kids dropping stuff. It was a first seeing salad a sandwich and lasagne all on top of each other with a cake on top! Top tip get 2 plates or even better keep going back! It's aloud. 
The drinks, bit mixed on this as some ok some not, wine ok, cocktails and spirits average. 
The beach, it's a bit of a walk, about 10/15 min steady walk, Plenty of shade and loads of sun-beds, sea is good too with life guards. The downside is the beach bar, absolute rubbish, only beer and soft drinks, no cocktails no spirits and the staff are miserable and a bit rude. It's a shame because the beach and sea are Ok, bit let down by this as we prefer beach to the pool. We walked to the beach at Santa Maria a few times and that's worth a look, waking about in the town is safe, get off the main bit and the local bars and restaurants are great.
Would we go back, Cape Verde absolutely, this type of hotel maybe not, bit big and chaos at times.

Great Stay, Winter Sun!

Amazing weather and fantastic staff. The resort is extremely clean. For us, more of a daytime resort than night time as  entertainment generally not great. Friday parties are magic but the entertainment on directly before the hotel team was tedious. 
Pool is excellent and food above average and plenty to choose from. Downfall for me was continental options are not presented in a cold enough serving area. Refrigeration is at the wrong setting for the heat in the resort/hotel. 
Things that let the resort down in terms of not being 5 star are no sparkling wine except Sunday AM, limited cocktails and alcohol options, evening entertainment, no daytime treats, poor snack options and a wee bit dated. 
I suspect the issues with upset stomachs, from our observations, is more to do with the behaviour of some people rather than the hotel’s practices.
For the cost, the weather, pool and people the resort and Island are well worth a visit and we will return to Cabo Verde, just not sure we would choose a Riu again.

Good Holiday

Everything is beautiful and the staffs are very friendly I did recommend to anyone who likes to have fun at the resort

This was our second visit to the Funana, the first being in 2007. 
The room was very  clean, as was the reception and all areas of the hotel
Great food, plenty to choose from, we had a  great time, staff were very friendly and entertainment was good, speciality restaurants were fantastic but you must book well in advance on the APP. Very windy at times, this is usual for the island. Would highly recommend this hotel and will be back sometime.

Fantastic family holiday, great Hotel.

We were concerned  before arriving here after seeing the unfavourable reviews. I am pleased to report that we have found the hotel welcoming, clean, with good food and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Thanks to all the staff who made my 64th Birthday special, the meal at the Kulinarium restaurant was excellent and the champagne a lovely addition. No tummy problems at all! However I am allergic to mozzie bites so brought some antihistamines and over the counter hydro cortisone cream, consequently I was bitten but they soon disappeared. Thank you to the Funana for a memorable two weeks, we will return for some winter sun next year.

A great time

Really enjoyed our stay in this very nice hotel. Everything was good and the evening entertainment was brilliant every night. Lovely beach. Nice rooms cleaned every day.
You can't please all the people all the time but this hotel will please most of the people most of the time.
NO moquitos and no upset tummy.

Fun time at Funana

I will be as honest as possible. Staff are lovely and friendly. Food ok but resteraunt very over crowded and resembles a school diner hall.
No where in hotel to relax as continuously banging music out especially around the pool and scratching over microphones resembles club 18 to 30s . Rooms are appalling do not resemble a five star and old scruffy worn out towels.

If you usually gone 5 star avoid this hotel it's lucky if it's a 3 but that's my opinion and we always do 5 star. Feel sorry for staff as they try so hard. Shame on Riu chain hotels
