Friendly hostess with an encyclopedic knowledge of her beautiful city. The bed was graced with sumptuous linens and the room was immaculate. Breakfast at eight was copious and the bread and croissants were so good. An espresso coffee topped it all off. Mary is so gracious and knows how to welcome her guests and made us feel so welcome.

Ill-prepared for an extremely crowded night in Qc city, we had the misfortune of having found no place to stay in spite of dozens of calls to neighbouring hotels and hostels. Mary was truly a lifesaver when, against all odds, she picked up the phone at 10:45PM and graciously offered us a better place to stay the night than our cramped car.

A quick 10-15min drive from downtown Qc city, the B&B is a beautiful house with a gorgeous backyard. Due to the last minute nature of our request, we were lodged in the basement. The room was clean and the beds were very comfortable. In addition, we had the privilege of having our own bathroom and shower. In the morning, we were treated to a delightful breakfast composed of home-made crepes with fresh strawberries and maple syrup as well as croissants, jams and coffee. 

Mary was a caring and attentive host. Over breakfast, we had the chance to hear of her fascinating adventures around the world. We even got the opportunity to tour the rest of the house which is filled with artefacts collected from her numerous voyages. 

We are thankful for Mary's genuine hospitality and kindness. In spite of our stay being only 1 night, we really enjoyed our time at B&B La California and hope to visit again in the near future.

I would highly recommend Bed and Breakfast La California to anyone visiting Quebec City. Mary is an incredible host, who takes care of all your needs. Why stay in a hotel, when you can have all the comforts of home with a gracious host and a wonderful breakfast? Mary is a lovely, generous and interesting woman. She is very attentive to all your needs and is also a great conversationalist, with amazing stories from her travels. She made us a wonderful breakfast, with some of the best croissants I have ever had (and I have been to Paris). My only regret is that we could only stay for one night, as we were just passing through Quebec City. However, we will absolutely be returning to take in the sights and will be staying with Mary again when we do! 

For most b&bs, the focus is on cleanliness and coffee/tea in the morning. With Mary's,. those issues are important, but she is a key element. She could found Uber-mom; you don't just stay in her house, you stay with her. She suggests restaurants and routes, and has still-warm croissants or a baguette for you in the morning with jams that produce Pavlovian responses on your second morning. By the second morning, she handed my wife a cup of coffee, the way Sandy likes it, as Sandy entered the dining room.

Her house shows her eclectic personality; books that beg to be read and artwork that tickles new spots in the brain.

But to get to the basics: the rooms and her backyard invite you to spend quality time there, and you must remember that to see Quebec, you are obliged to force yourself to leave. The house is quiet, in a residential neighborhood worth a walk in itself. Off-street parking is behind her house, and Mary can help direct you to public parking in various parts of the city.

Staying with Mary is a going-home while visiting Quebec.

As other reviewers have noted, staying at Mary's La California leaves you feeling as if this is your home away from home. Mary, the proprietress, knows almost everything about the area. She is a wealth of information and easily switches from speaking French to speaking English in case you don't feel fluent. I prefer the bedroom overlooking the backyard but any of the rooms are lovely. If you forget to bring a must have item Mary will almost certainly be able to help you out or point you in the right direction. You will find a wide selection of breakfast items to choose from in the morning. If you prefer a restaurant meal the Avenue Maguire is within walking distance, about a 30-minute walk or a 10-minute bus ride away. There is parking out back if you have a car, or, if you don't wish to drive, the number 25 bus runs up and down Chemin Saint-Louis and will take you into Old Town. A small grocery store is located across the street from the house but you wouldn't know it because the huge houses in this stunningly green, yet suburban, neighborhood are set back far enough from the main road that you don't hear much traffic. The atmosphere at La California is very relaxed and when the weather is nice the comfortable chairs in the backyard beckon so take along a good book or help yourself to one of the many books in her collection.
