We arrived at Auberge Vallee de la Rouge on a Saturday evening, just looking for a reasonable place to sleep before running a half marathon early the next day. However, this was too much to ask for, apparently! We walked into the "auberge," only to see that it was primarily a bar, with the bartender, a young girl of 18 or so, acting as the concierge. The scene was like something out of a Tarantino film I thought to myself as we weaved our way around the motley assortment of patrons, loud music blaring in our ears. Once we secured the key to our room, we headed upstairs forgiving the rather unconventional setup, just hoping to find a reasonably quiet room to rest our heads for the night. Unfortunately we were not so lucky!

The first room we had was located just above the speakers of the bar. It was extremely noisy. Additionally, we couldn't even lock the door from the outside! We asked the bartender if we could change rooms. She begrudgingly accepted, telling us that we weren't the only ones staying there that night who were running a half marathon the next day. Nice! 

The second room was less noisy, but even dingier, featuring a plastered-over hole in the wall next to the bed with some lovely green tape running up the garish red wall. There was no wastepaper basket in the room. We had a restless sleep. 

When we left in the morning we couldn't find any staff to check out with, so we just left the key for  the room on a small table under a pay phone by the entrance. Such nice organization and hospitality! If we had paid much less for this place, it wouldn't have been such a big deal. However, I've had much better experiences staying at youth hostels for a fraction of the price I paid. The only part of our stay that wasn't disappointing was that the shared bathroom was clean and renovated. Not worth a practically sleepless night though!
