We stayed three nights at this hotel. The rooms are pretty good with a bathtub, AC, a fridge, a TV, a king-size bed, a large wardrobe,... and some of them have a balcony! The hotel features a modern gym and a delightful swimming-pool. The staff is okay. They don't always understand what you say, even though they sound fluent in Kirundi, French and English, but that's a detail. It's not enough to spoil the atmosphere of this excellent hotel. At the top, you will find a restaurant. The Burundian dishes are good. The vegetarian dishes, on the other hand, won't get a smile on your face, but for a few days away from home you will survive (if you are vegetarian). We particularly enjoyed the view on lake Tanganyika. Overall, we had a great time at this hotel. I heartily recommend it to you (but keep in mind that you are in the poorest country in the world).

Very good hotel

This hotel was selected for a colleague and myself by someone else. I could not ask for a better place to stay. I'm used to staying in less expensive hotels when traveling through Africa but had no complaints about the luxury of this hotel. Dining on the shore of Lake Tanganyika in the evening and first thing in the morning cannot be beat. The bed was comfortable, the room clean and the ambient was quiet. What more do you need for an excellent night's sleep? Recommend without reservation.

Breakfast on the shore of Lake Tanganyika

Since 2006, until the Covid pandemic rendered international travel next to impossible in 2020, my work has resulted in my traveling from one country to another, mainly within the African continent, with the result that I have spent a great deal of time staying in hotels.  I have stayed in a total of six hotels in Bujumbura, and the best by far is the Hotel Safari Gate.  I spent a total of five weeks there between August and September 2021, and found myself totally "at home".  The location along the shores of Lake Tanganyika is much cooler than places in town, the staff could not be more welcoming and accommodating, and Mme La Directrice is an amazing person, with whom I have had the pleasure of sharing many meals with scintillating conversations.  I still go to the gym on a daily basis (good place to meet people) and often either dine or get take-aways from the "Paillotes" restaurant, located on the shores of the lake.  Excellent and reasonably priced food, served for more quickly than most eateries in Bujumbura.  The roof-top restaurant, La Terrasse, offers a delectable grilled aubergine salad, but is a bit pricy and the service can be slow.  I did not use the pool (having had a bad experience at Hotel du Club, wherein I was infected by giardia - the cysts cannot be destroyed by chlorine) but it is very popular with locals and expats both. The garden is absolutely amazing (and I am a horticulturalist by training), with an incredible range of plant species, and frequented by many birds. If possible, stay at Hotel Safari Gate!

Best place to stay in Bujumbura, by far!

I stayed here for 4 days for work.  It was very clean, comfortable, and the staff were excellent.  They spoke English and French, and were very accommodating and responsive.  The restaurant on the roof was excellent with local, continental, asian and fusion dishes.  The WIFI was not very consistent, but that was all over the country.

Comfortable and very friendly

Spent a couple of nights there, it is a very warm welcoming place far from Bujumbura's mess. Rooms are big and clean, and showers have hot water, which is not very common in town.
My room had direct access to the swimming pool and even the gym is fine and well equipped.
Lastly, this hotel has a beautiful terrasse with professional staff that will invite you to get the best possible food experience to enjoy the view.

Amazing view on Lake Tanganyika

We stayed twice and enjoyed the hotel. Rooms were comfortable ( though our A/C did not work right the first night or we could not figure out how to make it cooler but we did not notice till the middle of the night.) I like that there are 2 restaurants to choose from and we enjoyed our meals at both restaurants.  The beach restaurant should have a house wine by the glass but the pizza was quite good.
We had great WiFi even in the room which was really nice.


Nice hotel great food

This review applies to the restaurant. We come here with five people to have dinner. Huge parking lot. We find the restaurant upstairs. Not all drinks are available. Food is o.k. The portions are plentiful. There is a nice view of the lake.

Nice terrasse with lake view

Pleasant hotel with friendly staff, with the Musée vivant just around the corner. Lots of space. Breakfast is served on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. On the second floor an open air restaurant with sophisticated cuisine, European and Asian dishes. African food is served on the lake terrace. Enjoyed it.

Nice hotel with a terrace on the lake side

My kids and I decided to use the swimming pool for an afternoon. The receptionist who grew up d us was very hospitable and accommodating. She explained that it would be 10,000 FBu for adults and 6,000 FBu for children under 13 years old. No towels provided though.
It’s not a lapping pool but it gave us a good swim. There is also a baby pool. There were three changing rooms and 2 outdoor showers available. Situated in the hotel garden, it was a relaxing afternoon in their pool.

Comfortable use of swimming pool

Very nice hotel. Spacious grounds in a wonderful location close to the beach. Breakfast by the lake was awesome. For those who swim for exercise, the pool is incredible. Should have carried my costume! Also has a nice gym. I wonder if some rooms have overhead showers as mine only had a bath tub. I will certainly wish to be back.
