I stayed during Carnaval, so the prices did go up when carnaval started, but you can't escape that. It was a bit of a hike up a steep street to get there, but the hostel was really nice and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I stayed in a co-ed dorm room, and it was nice. So hot during my stay. Breakfast was upstairs and was your typical brazilian breakfast ( bread, butter, jam and cheese, fruit, juice and coffee), which I got sick of after a few nights, but there is a super market near by and you can use the kitchen as much as you'd like. There is a nice balcony area and hammocks where you can enjoy your breakfast or caipis at night :)
