Surf Hostel Bonaire

We loved this calm place with the really friendly and helpful staff. The room was tidy and had a nice size. The kitchen was huge and fully equiped. Babet made always good coffee in the morning. We would stay there again.

Had a comfortable stay here in the apartment, great kitchen facilities and common area and wifi. The dorm rooms had already closed and I was told the apartments would no longer be rented after March. A shame as it is a wonderful location out in the rural area, where the stars are amazing. It was also the cheapest place on Bonaire, but you need a truck to commute.

The surf hostel is perfect for budget travelers - the rooms are great value too, pleasant and large, with a private bathroom that is huge and super clean. The shared areas (communal kitchen, lounge) are spacious and comfortable and well-maintained. It's a great atmosphere, very friendly, especially great for windsurfers; you get to meet other surfers from all over the world, as well as world-champion local windsurfers. It's located in a beautiful natural area, but this also means that's it's a bit isolated; not really within walking distance of grocery shopping nor of the windsurfing spot, so you need to hitch-hike (very easy on Bonaire as long as you're not on a specific schedule) or rent a scooter. There is no daily transit from the hostel to anywhere so you need to make your own day-to-day transport arrangements. Another thing to be aware of is the water situation: almost everywhere on Bonaire you can drink the tap water, which is produced by desalination and is delicious and safe, but because the hostel is not connected to the water mains (water is brought in by truck), you can't drink the tap water here, so be prepared to bring your own from the grocery store or buy it in in small bottles (500 ml at a time) at the hostel. You will also need to buy all your own food and bring it in as there is no longer a restaurant on site. Despite these minor inconveniences, it is a great place to stay if you're on a budget, especially if you're a windsurfer traveling alone. Also it is part of a wonderful social project to give opportunities to kids and young people on Bonaire, so you can feel even better about staying here!

great value, friendly atmosphere

Really nice place to be

I had a mediocre experience at the Surf Hostel. However, considering what I paid for my stay, it was totally worth it. Upsides: dirt cheap, friendly staff, running water, Wi-Fi (only works in the common room). Downsides: no a/c, flies & mosquitos, poor maintenance (empty pool, cracked floor tiles), non-drinkable tap water. The Surf Hostel is great if you want to pay next to nothing for a place to stay - there's nothing alarmingly wrong. But if you do have the money, I would not recommend it.

Nothing fancy - stay here if you're on a budget

The owner is ok I think. But there is nothing than dirty fly in de buildings. No interest in paying customers. De room was poor but clean. Never again. Better pay a little more than this. Spent your money somewere else.
