I would give our experience a 10 out of 5!!! If you are a horseback rider, then I HIGHLY recommend the ride to Big Rock Falls…. SPECTACULAR Riding through the jungle, then to the ridge where jungle meets pines! Gallop through…!!! 
Stop at the falls, jump in the pools, get a “massage” from the waterfall. Then, if that is not enough, get out of the water to a 10 star meal “on the rocks” all authentic Belizean food! Then ride on home! This is a 5 hour ride so for horse enthusiasts. They offer a shorter ride to closer falls as well. 
Can’t say enough about the staff, the owner and the care of their horses. If you want an amazing ride, you won’t regret a single moment! 


Wow!

I travelled with my parents to Belize back in March 2019 and stayed at MET for an amazing week. The location is beautiful, we stayed in a lovely cottage with very comfortable beds. The food was great too, they even provided different meal options for the picky eaters! Everyday it was a new adventure from visiting Caracol, an ancient Mayan archeological site, canoeing in caves, riding to several waterfalls, and adventuring through the Belizean forests. The guides are all incredibly nice and knowledgeable. They have a plethora of horses for all levels of riders, beginners and expert equestrians alike! If ever you stop by, please give Papillon, a foal I named back in 2019, a nice pat :) From the incredible staff, great horses, dogs, beautiful birds and delightful scenery, it is impossible not to fall in love with Mountain Equestrian Trails!

Paradise for equestrians and jungle lovers alike!

My family of 5 did the all day excursion to Big Rock Falls today.  David and Brian were so accommodating and did everything in their power to make sure we were safe and comfortable. When we come back to Belize, we will definitely return to MET.  Lunch was included and was delicious!!  Thank you for showing us a great time!!  

Best guides ever

We were staying at a resort nearby and Jim came, picked us up and brought us to the ranch. We were taken by Rico and Oman (not positive of that name) on a 1/2 day ride through the glorious jungle. We loved it!  Rico shared tons of info on the trees, plants and animals that we saw. Such a cool experience. This was followed by a very delicious lunch on the patio surrounded by hummingbirds galore and tucans!  It’s definitely a bird-lovers delight!  (None of us are experienced riders.)

Great Morning!  Highly recommend

My friend and I loved this place.  The morning birds, the horseback riding, the delicious meals (my friend is vegan and she was delighted, I eat everything and I was delighted, too).  Alex was our charming and knowledgable guide, his equally charming brother David picked us up at the airport and drove us to Placencia at the end of our stay.  We were not up for more than 1/2 days on horses, but they adjusted the rides so we were able to fully experience the area. One caveat:  this is an ecolodge and there is no electricity in the rooms.  The dining area/bar/lounge has electricity and wifi, so you will not be out of touch unless you want to be, but the rooms have kerosene lanterns and mosquito netting.  

One of the horses is named Khaleesi, I wonder if she will get rechristened now ...

Wonderful place, wonderful people.

During a short visit to friends who were in Belize we went to stay for 2 nights at MET. It was a delightful interlude in the most beautiful location and with brilliant hosts. Jim and Lacy were charming, hospitable and thoughtful, their staff equally welcoming and their guides knowledgeable and informative. Being accommodated in lovely oil lamp lit cabanas made it all the more memorable. It would be wonderful to return one day.

Mountain Equestrian Trails Review

My girlfriend and I spent 4 glorious nights here. David picked us up at Belize airport. Alex was our cowboy and guide during the day. He was amazing. Meals were incredible. I got special vegan options   We did not mind the lack of electricity because it brought us closer to nature. Thank you Jim Beavis for creating this place. David and Alex drove  us to Placencia and we finished the trip at amazing beaches.

Perfect adventure. Be in touch with nature and Mayan ruins and caves and......   great vegan food offered as option.

We have friend who live up the road from Mountain Equestrian Trails.  We have visited them twice.  My wife and I enjoy riding on vacations,that's something we have done each time we go on a rule vacation.  My wife has taken lessons but is not the best rider.  I on the other hand, have little riding experience.  When booking a ride at M.E.T. you are asked where you rate yourself as a rider.  I always grade myself a 1 or 2 out of 5.  My wife is a 2 or 3 out of 5.  Your guide will hook you up with the horse that best suits your riding ability.  Both times, my horse was friendly and took listened and behaved to my ability.  Last year we did a half day ride and this year we did a full days ride to Barton Creek Cave.  We rode past Mennonites working and homes on very rural dirt roads (bring sunscreen).  We arrived at Barton Creek Cave in approximately 2.5 hours.  Our guide Alex, was excellent.  The year before on the half day ride we had Rego and his nephew Levi.  The two guides we had were both excellent.  They pointed out specific trees, birds and other sights.  Once we reached Barton Creek Cave, Alex took us inside and paddled us in a canoe and pointed out specific formations in the cave along with some Mayan history.  I then went for a short swim while Alex set up a lunch for us at Barton Creek.  After lunch we rode back to M.E.T.  It was a perfect 6 or 7 hour day.  If you are in the area of Mountain Pine Ridge, you should either book a stay or at least go out for a half or full day ride.

So Good We Returned a Year Later

After reading all the great reviews I booked the MET for my family of 5 for three nights in the jungle. I used Booking.com because I have "genius benefits" which included breakfast.  We were fooled at the bus station in Belize City into thinking we were taking the express bus and arrived late (7pm) into San Ignacio. Alex, a shiny and smiling soul was there waiting to pick us up even though we were terribly late and were unable to notify them of our arrival due to no wifi on the bus. The room was clean, beautifully decorated, and had hot water for the showers. Upon arrival the first night we were served immediately (chicken curry) which was delicious for most of us. The youngest does not eat curry and there were no other options. The next day when I inquired about the meals I was informed that although the description of the lodge says restaurant it is actually not. They serve one dish at each meal and charge the same per plate for everyone. In our case we were quoted $8 USD breakfast, $20 USD dinner. That's $140 USD a day in food not including lunch. When you see restaurant you think - menu? Not the case. The transfer from/to town was going to be $100 USD each way even though I had inquired prior to arrival and was sent a message stating $40 USD for 1-4 people. I had already booked so I assumed they could see there was 5 of us. Some resorts don't count children under 12 (free) so I assumed I was getting a break. Lacy informed me they rented a car especially to transport us so we had to make up the difference. This car disappeared on our return trip to town and they opted for the 2 vehicle approach when we departed yet still charged the $100 USD. We wanted to see the market on Saturday but it seemed discouraged by some of the members of staff so we decided to ride instead. There was another large group there so we agreed to go to the waterfall with them. Initially, my daughter was unsure about riding a horse and we were assured that they would drive her to meet with us at the waterfall. At the last minute, she wanted to ride so my husband stayed behind as there were not enough horses then for all of us to go. When my husband did not arrive at the waterfall David said he decided to bail out at the last minute. Arriving back to the lodge my husband explained that they were going to charge full price for the "horseback riding to the waterfall" even though he did not ride which took up 2/3 of the time alotted for the excursion.  They arranged a tour of the ATM for us at +$25 more pp than the advertised rates...kickbacks? All in all they were friendly, aside from David who repeatedly had snarky comments - this was noted by other guests as well. My youngest and I rode back from the waterfall  the truck due to being separated on the way there and her being placed into the "faster" group without consulting me. She arrived at the waterfall in tears of fear. All in all I feel taken. Our bill was more than double what was budgeted and we ate granola bars in our room for several meals. Perhaps if you have no budget or disposable funds this place is for you. 

Jim is a jolly addition that we very much enjoyed spending time with  and the hummingbirds are everywhere and fun to watch :)
