If you're looking to get back to nature, then look no further than the Cocao Rainforest Lodge.

Roger and Zoila have made a wonderful, welcoming home in the jungle, and you're pretty much guaranteed to see some amazing animals during your stay (we saw geckos, hummingbirds, toucans, scorpions, and beetles as big as your fist).

Our room had a good sized bed with fans above it to keep us cool at night and an en-suite bathroom. Roger and Zoila were kind enough to drive us into the nearby village every day for breakfast burritos and evening meals.

The house is just moments away from the Blue Hole National Park where they have a number of caves to visit (I recommend cave tubing with a guide organised by Roger) as well as go swimming in the Blue Hole itself.

Finally, don't forget to have some of the chocolate truffles and chocolate tea that Roger and Zoila make. They're delicious!

Off the grid adventure

I Stayed one night here and it was great! The place is clean and comfortable and great place to stay in the jungle. There is a cave on the property right behind the main house. Rodger was an excellent host, we really enjoyed the morning coffee. I'll be going back to stay a little longer and explore!

Great place in the jungle !

We wanted a place we could use as a base of operations to look for property and this place included chocolate. Great people, food, drink, and did I mention the chocolate... The place is family friendly yet in the jungle with easy access to everywhere.

Great Chocolate and Stay

My husband and I stayed at the Cocao Rainforest Lodge in the Howler Room for four nights at it was great! Roger and his wife were excellent hosts.

Pros:
-Off grid: Frankly, I didn't want to feel guilty about staying in a sprawling, western-style resort during my stay in Belize. I wanted to feel like I was seeing the country and experiencing the culture. Staying here accomplished that goal. It's rustic yes (I was expecting that), but you are experiencing Belize. If it's raining, you might feel damp. If it's sunny, you get hot. But I'll take both of those thing to preserve Belize's natural beauty. I can get air conditioning in a Walmart. I wanted to experience Belize. 
-Food: We ate most of our meals here, and oh my goodness...so amazing! First of all, they certainly make enough food to feed an army, so you will never starve. Second, the food was great. We are difficult to please (come from a place that is food-obsesssed, I am vegetarian, my husband is kosher), and they were so accommodating. They had some help (a wonderful woman named Norelli (sp?)), and she was an amazing cook. We did not have a bad, or even mediocre, meal our entire stay. 
-Chocolate: This is same site as Lamanai Chocolate, a chocolate-making company that uses traditional Mayan methods (practiced by modern Mayans on site) to make chocolate products. So we had chocolate every meal. It was amazing. And it made perfect gifts for all our friends and family back home! 
-Price: Compared to the prices in the area, you get a lot for the price. 
-Hosts: Roger and his wife Zuela (sp?) know the country so well, its history, its culture, the wildlife, everything. It so nice to be able to ask questions, not feel stupid, and get some education while still feeling like you are on vacation. Actually, Roger couldn't book a tour for us on our last day (not enough notice - our fault), so he just took us on a hike himself. And it was great! 
-Safety: Belize is a relatively safe country, but still, it's foreign, we didn't know our way around, couldn't really navigate the transportation system (didn't rent a car and really didn't need one), and so on. Our hosts told us how to get everywhere (or just gave us a ride there). We went way outside our usual comfort zone, and felt completely safe doing so. They even told us how much the taxis should cost (the tourist price), so we would know if we were getting ripped off. So helpful!
-Help booking tours: There is no cell reception, and no internet. If they didn't help us book tours, we would have been lost. But also, they knew which tours and guides to book. Roger was right every time. We had great tours, knowledgable guides, and much fun. 
-Location: This was perfect for what we wanted. Near the capital, Belmopan, near all the tours, middle of jungle. So peaceful, but close to everything we wanted to do. The furthest we traveled was ~1.5 hours to San Ignatio, which was no big deal (see above - they told us exactly how to get there!)
-Property: The property is amazing. Very wild, very non-manmade. If you want little signs on all the plants, you won't get it here. You will hit your head on a wayward vine though. It was amazing. Walk two minutes from your bedroom and you feel like you are in a movie. Plus there is a real cave on the property. (There might be more, but we only toured one.) You can see the entrance from the house. You go in (with Roger) and it is deep, large, and amazing! 
-Elvis, Mopan, and Kichi (sp?): They have a dog and cats. We are animal people, so it made it feel that much more like a home. Elvis (this dog) came on hikes with us and helped make sure we got back safely. The cats kept the snakes at bay, and were super cute. (If you are allergic, they are mostly outdoor. My husband is allergic and he had no problem.) 

Cons (just to be honest, and make sure travelers are booking the right spot for them. All of the cons were easily outweighed by pros for us):
-Its rustic: Sometimes the generator dies and the power goes out for a few minutes (Roger fixes it quickly). Sometimes you don't get hot water. Sometimes there are spiders, or ants, or something else. Like I said, if its raining or humid, everything is damp. You are in a rain forest though, so...just enjoy it!!!

Went a few steps outside our typical comfort zone staying here, and didn't regret it at all, at the end of the trip it was well worth it. Beautiful property, gracious hosts, a cultural experience, and so many stories. This is what I wanted in my vacation.

P.s. We booked through AirBnb, but didn't write a review within their timeframe (apparently you only have 14 days to do so). That is only reason we don't have a review there.

Amazing heart of the jungle experience!

From our initial inquires, our Hosts provided excellent communication that led me to choose this location for our first trip to this facinating Country. This rustic, off-grid lodge is located in a beautiful, heavily-forested area about 13 miles outside the small town of Belmopan, the Belizean capital. Roger provided advance info on airport to bus, bus to Belmopan, then picked us up at Belmopan's bus terminal. This made getting there relatively easy, while giving us a taste of the countryside along the way. We were warmly greeted and made to feel like a welcome part of the family throughout our visit. Aside from our own adventures, we hung out with Roger and Zoila as they traveled around the region buying produce from the local farmers, dairy and produce from the remote Mennonite communities, and trips into the villages to find our evening meals. Roger knows and understands the Country. He maintains contacts throughout and if there's something you'd like to see or do, he'll provide options and directions on how you can get there, with consideration for your budget. Depending on his schedule, he's happy to provide affordable transportation and guide service, himself. My Son and I enjoyed the clean, rustic accommodations carved out in this jungle setting. As night settles in, the sounds of nature are all around. This goes on into the morning and included the unmistakeable calls of Howler Monkeys, who communicated among themselves each night we were there. This Lodge and our Hosts made our first trip to Belize an especially good experience. We got closer to the jungle, the rivers, the cultures and the foods of the region than we might have, if we had stayed elsewhere. We also got to see how an off-grid lodge operates; the electric supply, water systems, internet - and the beautiful star-lit darkness of the jungle when the generator turns off. We're glad we chose this setting and most thankful to our Hosts!
