It was just a place to crash for the night as we had a concert to attend in Brussels. We regretted this. The place smelt like antiseptic, the shower holder was falling off, the toilet had stains from probably 20 years ago, the bed was hard, the pillows were so thin we could fold it in half, but you get what you pay for I suppose. The hotel staff were not friendly, we had issues with our room key and they were quite disorganised about it. It was rather shocking that they just tried random rooms (to test the proximity key) not knowing which ones had guest and which don't and this brings up questions of security. 

Do not recommend

My wife and i booked this hotel using Booking.com, and from the pictures it looked lovely so we proceeded to book in for 3 nights for our anniversary.

All was not as it seemed though as the pictures were not a true reflection of what you will find in this hotel.

Lets start with when we arrived at the hotel, there was nobody manning the reception and we were left waiting for nearly 15 minutes before somebody decided to speak to us. Then we were requested to pay for the stay up front before we even got our room key which we found to be a little suspicious, as if the hotel dont trust that their guests would pay their bill, or is it all a ploy to ensure they are paid regardless of the hotels quality... 

We enter the room to find extremely dated décor and a freezing cold room. Upon further inspection we found that the toilet seat was not attached to the toilet which nearly caused my wife to have a closer look at the tiled floor, the curtains were hanging off the wall meaning that sunlight would enter the room as soon as it broke the horizon and only 1 plug socket in the room worked. 

Little did we know but our room was directly above a late night cocktail bar, which had music blaring loudly until midnight meaning very little sleep was had on our first night after nearly 12 hours of travel. I had to sleep in a hooded jumper and trousers due to there being no heating in the room whatsoever and the temperature dropping to 2 degrees. 

The next morning we woke to find that there was no hot water for a shower either and that the sheets we had been sleeping in weren't very clean. 

Enough was enough...

All in all this was a terrible start to what was meant to be a romantic trip away. 

We decided the next morning that we would complain and that we would book the remaining 2 nights of our stay at the local IBIS hotel as we knew we would have a better quality of stay there, which we did. So in total, we stayed 1 miserable night out of the 3 originally booked.

When we approached the staff member in the morning we were told that he did not speak English and we would have to wait until after 12pm to speak to someone about our complaint so we headed out to enjoy the city after spending nearly 12 Euros on a cold croissant and an espresso coffee which we had been told would be included in our stay. 

When we arrived back at the hotel at 4pm we were greeted by the restaurant manager who spoke little English and that he wasnt the hotel manager but we got our complaint across. He admitted that the heating system was broken and they were still waiting for this issue to be fixed and that he would ask the hotel manager to call us but could understand why we wanted to leave. 

We left the hotel after only spending 1 night of the 3 fully expecting a call from the manager to resolve this issue. This did not happen!

After countless emails to Booking.com requesting a refund from the hotel i was advised that if i went back to the hotel, this would be actioned but i would need to contact the hotel for my refund. 

When i called the next day, i was finally able to speak to the manager who immediately called me a liar and refused to refund my money despite telling Booking.com that she would. Claiming that i had in fact stayed the entire weekend and that i was lying about my experience and that having no hot water or heating "Was Nothing". The manager was extremely rude to me on the phone and eventually stopped listening to me and ignored me when i was speaking to her. 

All in all this has been the worst experience ive had in all my year of travel and i would definitely recommend you stay somewhere else as if there are any problems, you will be ignored and treated terribly

Worst hotel ive ever been in!

The lift, room and bathroom were very small. The lift can accommodate only 2 people at a time (without any luggage). 

The ambiance of the dining hall was attractive but not the rooms. Though it was clean, the walls had some scratches. There was no remote for the TV.  

There is no A/C for summer and if you keep the windows open, you'll not be able to sleep in the night due to the noise from the streets nearby.
 
The bathroom/toilet area was very small. The toilet closet was smaller than standards. Shower area was good and there was towel and toiletries provided. The photos may be deceptive.

Breakfast just had bread,croissants, juice and hot drinks. it doesn't seem to be worth for EUR 8.50. However, as we had arrived late in the night and left the next day morning, the small issues did not bother us.

The staffs were cheerful and helping!
This hotel is recommendable only if you're visiting the Atomium.

suitable for one night stay

Wasn't overly impressed with Hotel Frederiksborg. Overall it wasn't awful but there were too many little niggles that let it down. It was a very basic hotel and if you're looking for somewhere to rest your head then i guess it's okay, however i wouldn't have paid the full 65eu a night that they charge as standard. 

Good points: 
- Beds were comfy enough and the place was relatively clean 
- Towels changed every day
- TV in room 
- Restaurant downstairs 
- The service was good and helpful from the hotel staff during check in and when we enquired about things but one of the men who was working new year's eve was a bit grumpy (maybe understandable) 
- Transport links are good to the town centre from Simonis metro station, however there is a bit of a walk (10-15mins) through a lovely park.

Bad points: 
- We had a shower over the bath in our room, expect there was nothing to hold the shower cord so you had to hold it up and the cord wasn't particularly long either.
- The plug sockets are NOT safe (see picture) i don't know what it's like in Belgium but some sort of authority would have something to say about these in the U.K. 
- The plug sockets by the bed were wired in to the same switch as the light so if you turned the light off, you also turned the power to the sockets off. This meant that we couldn't charge our phones overnight unless we wanted to sleep with the light on. 
- Bit noisy at night with cars etc and the water pipes but this may depend what room you're in. 

We ate in the restaurant on the last night, the food was alright and fairly priced however the service was extremely slow and we were given bread at the start of our meal with little tubs of butter in it and the basket had obviously just been reused as one of the butters had been opened and used.

Not impressed

The room is very basic and a little bit scary. It was small and dark and there was no hair dryer in the room. I would rate this hotel with a one star, but since the bed was okay and there was a tv in the room, I could see that people with a budget could enjoy this place. For me, the experience was not worth the money, since the hotel was far away from the city, the service was really rude and the room was lacking a lot. 

Wouldn't recommend

To get to the hotel from Simonis train station is a 10 minute walk through the most beautiful park - in autumn the colours were surreal. The hotel itself is also a restaurant and bar which supplies decent breakfasts, lunches and dinners. We ate there twice and were not disappointed with the service, price or quality of the fare. Directly across the road is the most delightful patisserie - I have to say I have never enjoyed pastries more. Why are the Belgians not fat?? Our room was small but complete. Every day our linen was changed and the room cleaned. Our towels were on a heated towel rail and the bathroom was quite modern. We were on the third floor with a direct view of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Amazing! Whilst street noise could be heard it wasn't intrusive enough to affect our sleep. Overall, the only way we were aware that the Hotel Frederiksborg was not an expensive European chain was the low price we paid for the accommodation. We would stay again and recommend it to the budget conscious traveller.

2star delight

Just a little chamber, with bed and a table. Bedsheets were dirty but the staff was not enough friendly and responsible to change them. Bathroom was clean. Little bit older but at last clean. The restaurant was a little bit expensive but we did not use it.
