As a family we have spent many holidays in St. Gilgen, most of them at the Gasthof Kendler. Right in the heart of the village, this hotel offers spacious and comfortable rooms. We were pleasantly surprised at the high standard of the refurbishment since the pandemic. But above all, Mr. and Mrs. Kendler welcomed us back with grace and kindness. The food was excellent and varied, catering for carnivores and vegetarians.
We will certainly be back.

We booked a small wedding (45) people at this lovely family run hotel because we knew that everything would go brilliantly. From the moment we sat down with Seppi and Maria the husband and wife team who own the hotel, we felt we could trust them completely to organise the best day ever. And on the day itself, everything ran like clockwork, the drinks flowed, the food was astonighing (schnitzel and strudel) and nothing was too much trouble. All our guests fell for the Hotel Kendler and St Gilgen. We live in the heart of central london  and wanted to enjoy effortless hospitality, cosiness, fun and astonishing value for money - something that is just so hard to find now. Thank you so much Hotel Kendler .

We spent some time picking this hotel, looking at the reviews. We feel we made a good choice staying here. The rooms are large and comfortable. The food both for breakfast and the evening meal is excellent. We ate in the hotel both nights we stayed, we had intended only eating there once but we enjoyed the first meal so much we ate there a second time. When we go back to this part of Austria it will be an easy choice to go to the Hotel Kendler again.

I wanted a place to stay on the lakes, that would be reasonable, friendly and a place where I could develop my German. I got everything I wanted including good weather.
  The room I got even for a single was good and looked down the street to the lake even though it wasn't visible, on one side was the Schafberg and the other side was the zwolferhorn.
 The Schafberg can easily be reached by the boat from the lake shore which stops around the lake at various drop off points, and the Zwolferhorn is only 100m to the cable car station, unless you want to walk up it, about 2.5hrs.
    I rented a car giving me more flexibility as I wanted to go to Eagles Nest in Germany, about an hours drive on the Autobahn.
   A brilliant week which has finished too quickly



Location of the hotel is important to me and Gasthof Kendler is right in the centre of this beautiful, chocolate box setting. Staff are lovely, rooms are good, the bar and food is very good. You can then leisurely walk around and explore this beautiful town, admire the lake, savour a hot chocolate and be mystified by war memorials and war memorabilia in the second hand shops. I know it seems strange that there is a war memorial for the German SS and other German units but, I then had to remind myself that they were someone's son, brother, father. That is only one aspect of this town's history, you then have the link with Mozart. Wow! Mozart comes from St Gilgen?! NO he doesn't!
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart never visited St. Gilgen. Apparently, he had intended to, his grandfather worked in the town, his mother was born in St. Gilgen, and his sister moved there after her marriage but Wolfgang himself never stepped foot here. 
Oh well, beautiful village though.

My group of five (aged between 7 and 80) had a delightful short stay at this hotel in St Gilgen. Right in the heart of the town, with everything really close by, and yet generally quiet at night for a good sleep, this is a hotel in the traditional Austrian style, well furnished, clean, comfortable  - large rooms on 1st floor without balcony or smaller rooms on 2nd floor with balcony. The breakfast buffet is good, the bread rolls particularly crispy and tasty. The meals in the restaurant are traditional Austrian, well cooked, and served by a friendly staff (with a good eye to keeping children happy!). There is a beer garden if you prefer to eat outside. The restaurant has been recently modernised - the result lacks a bit of the warmth you expect in traditional Austrian hotels, which explains why only 4  points! All in all, a good place to stay in St Gilgen, with excellent value for money.

Brilliant hotel

The hotel is lovely, design just gorgeous, room adequate size, no fridge or ice FYI. It can be a busy area with some noise (delivery truck, people dining late outdoors) but we liked the central location and church bells. Did not feel very welcomed however, from the start of a lack of smile and almost an eyeroll at check in to being moved in the dining area. I value warmth and welcoming along with the accommodations, and this only did well in the accommodations area. Would not stay again.

Beautiful hotel, lacked welcome

Having lived for three years in Austria, I have never experienced the blatant discrimination and outrageously awful treatment I received at Hotel Kendler. It was definitely a first when the restaurant manager told me he didn't want my business because all I did was ask if they had vegan options. Even though they have steamed vegetables and boiled potatoes on their menu as side dishes, they refuse to serve vegetarian/vegan because, as the owner/manager man who came out to yell at me (he stood by the door of the restaurant and literally yelled at me while I was sitting 2m away), they are a "butcher" family and they don't do "modern" cooking. He was aggressive from the moment he decided to stand by the door and yell at me instead of coming to the table to inform us that no substitutions or changes were possible. I cannot believe a restaurant would treat a potential patron that way. I asked him if he was telling me he didn't want my business and could not believe when he said we needed to go in front of other people at the restaurant.
