A very lovely, traditional Gasthaus with the nicest family running it.

I would 100% recommend to choose this pension if driving thru (like we did) or staying in the village.

Well priced and a simple but nice breakfast.

The big outlet center Brenner is only 30km from here so this is also a good place to spend the night if you plan to do a shopping trip. This is also a good option for a nights rest if you are heading to Italy. Much cheaper and cosier han Innsbruck or the northern Italy.

If you're looking for a place to sleep along the Brenner route, most of the "Gasthöfe" are roadside locations. The Pension Steiner in the middle of the charming little town of Matrei is located away from the road so that you can spend a really quiet night.
The owner is super-friendly and very helpful, the breakfast is hearty and delicious and the rooms are spacious enough even for a long stay. The furniture might be a little outdated, but the owner is still in the process of renovating the place and as people who don't mind old stuff as long as it's clean, we were absolutely content with the place. Wi-Fi Internet access is provided for free with the room and was working nicely.
The owner is planning an in-house restaurant, but since that wasn't there, yet, we took advantage of the nice city-centre location and checked out the Matrei restaurants in the course of a small evening walk.
Thumbs up from us, we'd definitely come back next time we're around!

Nice pension off the main road but very nice and quiet.   Room was clean and breakfast was nice.  May be more hectic in the winter rather than in June.  They recommended the Gasthof Lamm for dinner and was great (see my separate review of Gasthoff Lamm)

I've been at Pension Steiner during Xmas holidays and it has been great. I wanted to experience a real Sud-Tirol pension during my skiing vacations and it has been great. Super nice people, good food and, most of all, RELAX! This place is so peaceful that made me and my wife want to sleep in as much as we could!
A place to recommend, indeed.

Pension Stainer is located 20 minutes by train of the center of Innsbruck. Considering that the hotel is around of 700 m of the train station, is not hard to reach the city. The village where the pension is located is really small and has few things opened in the evening. Nevertheless the pension next-door neighbour is a restaurante that serves pizza, pasta and kebab and is open until 11 pm everyday. 
The room is simple, but has a really comfy bed and a good and hot shower. I thought the internet would be bad there but we did not have any problem with that. 
That hotel and the village in general was so peaceful that we could relax a lot and have good nights of sleep.
