Ferienhaus Olympia

First, this is not a flash resort with wall to wall entertainment and glitzy discos. It is a traditional Austrian Haus, very large, converted in to self catering apartments. We booked late and ended up in the loft on the top floor which was quite a hike with lots of luggage but was worth it. Views of the Zugspitse and the valley from the window were nice. The kitchen was very small but after buying supplies from the local Spar shop, was not an issue. Lunch was usually taken out and dinner was in house at the Bauernstuble (in house restaurant). . The host, Klaus, is quite a character and was very welcoming and friendly. The hotel bar, next to the restaurant is a hang out for locals. The beer is good as is the hazelnut schnapps. But a word of warning, the winds of change come slowly to rural Austria so if you are going to be over sensitive about people smoking at the bar, you have been warned. The food in the restaurant is excellent. I can recommend the Goulash and the zweibelrostbraten (roast beef with onions). Generous portions washed down with large beers. Overall a great week with Klaus and his staff. Some other great things to do in winter, apart from the skiing which is great and needs no further explanation are: 1. Therma pool in Reutte. Large swimming and spa complex with mineral pools and slides for the kids. A great way to spend half a day. McD's close by. 2. Ehernberg castle and suspension bridge, brilliant in good weather. Hard work in the snow. 3. Sleigh ride in the snow in Lermoos (Klaus can organise it for you) 4. Plansee. Beautiful lake resort in summer and high alpine pass in winter. Well worth a look and is on the way to Garmisch and Oberammergau (In Germany and also worth a day out).
