Frühstückspension Zanglhof

We stayed here the nights of April 12-14, 2014. Thanks to our GPS, we were able to find this place hidden away in the hills near Graz. It is a working pumpkin farm, producing a delicious oil, but the BB itself is a lovely and seemingly fairly new two level house in this rural farming area. The owner wasn't home when we arrived, but there was a note to us on the front entrance with our room key (something one wouldn't do back home in the US). We were also greeted by a pleasant man, a German engineer, who was staying here long-term on a work assignment in Graz. He showed us around downstairs and filled us in on the particulars of the place. As we found out later, he was quite a delightful fellow and we had some interesting conversations about Austria and the U.S. The owner arrived later and checked to see that we were well situated. The downstairs area had a large breakfast dining area plus sink, microwave, coffee-maker, refrigerator as well as a range of treats, some free, others pay on the honor system. The room was good-sized with a desk/chair; wardrobe, TV, and separate bath and toilet rooms. It was comfortable and quite adequate. Breakfast the first morning was 5 Euros, but turned out to be rather sparse for the cost. The second and third mornings we ate on our own. The owner had no quibble with this. Interesting to note that the entire house is heated by wood chips, keeping the place warm and easy to regulate temperatures. The local neighborhood has some quaint old buildings and barns, and the smallest old chapel I have ever seen. Apparently, they have ceased using this for services because most of the members have died. There are also a number of friendly cats to keep one occupied. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. It was quiet, charming and comfortable. We would stay here again without hesitation. They even gave us a sample bottle of their pumpkin oil, excellent for salad dressing.
