Art Deco Cottages at Tarraleah

The village of Tarraleah in the south of Tasmania was constructed for the workers building the impressive hydro-electric scheme. Now totally renovated it is a place to lounge by a log fire, cook delightful meals or have slow cooker meals delivered. Period furniture, clean as a whistle, heaps of charm and short bushwalks nearby. The cottage is roomy, warm, with 3 living areas, large kitchen, large bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Highly recommended for a unique Tasmanian experience.

We came to Tarraleah looking to relax after 4 days of walking up, down and around Hobart, MONA and Port Arthur, and it is the perfect spot. We also had a chance to catch up on some washing with our own washing machine, clothes airer and clothes dryer.
We stayed in a gorgeous 3 bedroom Architect's Cottage. It has a well appointed kitchen, 2 bathrooms, laundry facilities and a sun room perfect for a reading nook.
You do need to bring supplies if self catering but there is some coffee, tea, sugar, salt, pepper and dish washing liquid supplied.

  

We spent one night in the Architect's Cottage with three bedrooms, huge kitchen, various other rooms and a very cosy lounge with a wood fire, which we lit, it was a cool, rainy day.  Later the wallabies came out and ate the grass just outside the cottage - lovely!  This is a quirky location being the accommodation ages ago for the construction of hydroelectric power station.  there is a cafe on site but we had food with us.  We will stay again!   The cottage is fully self contained complete with washing machine etc.

We had booked one of the Engineer's Cottages for the 4 of us and it was perfect!  Plenty of living space, comfortable beds, and a well equipped kitchen (since we had to supply our own vittles on Sunday night).  

The old Hydro township was exceptionally well maintained and exceeded our expectations for overnight digs in the middle of nowhere.  We even saw our very first wombat at dusk!  Well worth a longer stay next time.

We stayed in the Engineer Cottages which were once occupied by the Hydro engineers and their families. The cottages were very spacious and clean, equipped with a cozy lounge area with woodfire, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (with laundry facilities), kitchen, reading area and a backyard. 

The history of this place is spectacular too. The large hydro pipes were gorgeous. We went for the Tarraleah Falls walk (50 mins return) and it was decent. 

Phone reception at the area is really poor. Only Telstra has reception. Wifi is available at communal places (not in the cottages). But I guess that's a good point for a tranquil retreat from every day life & technology.

Isolated Cottages in the midlands, perfect for a peaceful getaway

We were booked into this hotel by the package deal we had from Escape travel. Our fly drive holiday in Tassie was great except for this location. On arrival we saw these beautiful Art Deco cottages and we excited we would be staying in one of these. But alas No. We were in the school house. The old school from the village. It has been turned into "hotel rooms" (using the term loosely). More like a dorm with walls. There was communial dinning room and kitchen. The rooms were very noisey with doors banging all nignt.
So off we went to the "pub" for dinner. We were advised to book. But this did not matter 20 or 30 other people just turned up! The food was seconf rate. We ordered a bottle of Tasmanian wine. Came with a nice label but no details of the wine type, % of alchol or the number of standard drinks, all the things we expect from a good bottle of wine these days. On closer inspection we found that a printed label had been stuck over a clean skin bottle. Surely false advertising.
To make matters worse there is no phone coverage which was a problem for us as my wife and I had family in hospital.
Would avoid this place at all costs
