We booked and paid four months in advance, only to be told a few days before the booking, that the Jewel Suite was not available.  They offered alternative accommodation which was more than 10 km away from Emerald and as such was not suitable.  We had to cancel the booking.  Still waiting for the refund and been told it could take up to 30 days.  We advised that this was not acceptable and requested an immediate refund.  We have not heard from them despite emails and phone calls to Yarra Ranges Accommodation.   No one will talk to us by phone.  Extremely poor service.

Don't book here.

We arrived on a cold wet evening, walked up the slippery wet track with no lighting, only to be locked out as the key box was broken. As there was no phone reception (Optus and Telstra) here  managed contact to managers by text (they will not answer phone) we final were told where hidden keys to all the cottages are. We got inside to a very dingy (dark) room, with cob webs and dust.  

We attempted to have a spa, in an adjoining out house.  However there was insufficient hot water, so used kettle and stove top to heat more water.  Only to find the spa did not work any way.  Tried cooking with the gas cooker unfortunately with no markers to identify which knob applied to each ring etc.  We couldn't get the griller going.  3:30am in the morning woken by the spa, which decided to work.

The toilet backs up the following evening, RACV plumber arrives at 10:30pm about an hour later inform us he cannot fix.  7 am in bathroom washing face, there is a bloke 2 feet away from me walking outside the clear window.  I assume was another plumber. 7:30am  the power goes out. We go out for the day back at 4pm still no power, sewer on bathroom floor and house smelly.  Cannot use gas heater (needs electricity for fan and to light), no batteries for torch and wood to big fit in wood heater. We left and found alternative accommodation. Since then Stayz online or the owners have offer a refund for unused days.  Very little communication and only then by text or email. 

This place may have been nice once but has had very little maintenance, gutters over flowing, dirty, over grown gardens, rubbish and cigarette butts  etc etc.  

I have never rate a property a 1 before and never had such poor service before.

DON"T STAY HERE!

Advertised as cottage. Basically a shack. After arriving and following messy, dark and dangerous 'walkway' up towards our hillside cottage, there was rubbish, weeds and rotting piles of foliage along the way. Path was not clear or level at all and on arriving to the front door and viewing our 'private backyard' that was littered with cigarette buts, random stacked furniture and general rubbish (half a pair of scissors laying on the ground outside..?), we entered the cottage. We were met with a stale smell, a very dimly lit room and a grubby, sticky 'welcome book'. 

The tvs remotes batteries were completely dead. There was a dead spider sitting on the grubby window sill, there was one wine glass available and an extremely loud older fridge running which made it very hard to relax. 

We found make up and brown goop through the bed linen which was very unsettling. 

Our $55 camper of breakfast came Sunday morning. It consisted of some lovely fresh loaf of bread, mushrooms, tomatoes a small handful of spinach and some bruised, insect eaten Basil. Absolute rip off for what we paid. 

Attempting to make breakfast with out the proper instruments, proved to be stressful. There was no bench, let alone table  to prepare or eat at and no bread knife to slice the bread. The salt in the cupboard was greasy and grubby. 

Booked for 2 nights but left after one as it was more relaxing being at home than in this dingy shack. Management was difficult to reach and was completely ignored when we spoke of our concerns.

Dodgy, Dirty and Damp

Why do people use the word suite.  It was a room.  I had trouble finding it.  My 'parking bay' was useless, the station wagon stuck out into the small pathway and until you know you can drive up a pathway  and turn, it was impossible to figure out how I would get in and out of the allocated spot. I walked up the pathway to find my 'suite' and another parking spot and I realised it was difficult without a torch.  Luckily a young couple helped me.  I was actually at the wrong room door.  I didn't know that there was another door right next to that one, it was difficult to find in the dark.  I drove my car up the dark, fairly narrow, pathway to unpack  and I decided to leave the car adjacent to a shed ('barn').  The couple parked in the bay nearby told me to leave it, it was not in their way.  The room itself looked okay at first, but it was cold.  Over my two days there I followed the instructions about the heating, but the gas heater did not light.  I did not bother contacting them - having waited for ages after texting them about the impossible parking area.  You do have to get on the floor, with a torch to read the instructions for the gas heater!  I have used one before - it is simple - but  it just did not light.  I dropped something on the floor and when I dropped down to get it and saw under the bed, it was horrible.  The skirting board under the bed has not been dusted for months - and there were cobwebs under the bed itself.  Having read all the very strict guidelines about extra charges for everything, including their great cleaning services, it was quite ironic that there was such a disgusting mess under the bed.  I washed my plate, bowl and coffee cup in the bathroom sink (good hot water).  The cupboard with the cutlery etc in it had a broken wall which looked terrible.  I kept opening the wrong wardrobe door and on my last day the large, old ironing board  moved and behind it there was a small plastic tub and some washing detergent.  I don't know how you were supposed to know it was there.  I felt I was dealing with a robot with the texting and no personal contact.  A strange way to run a business.  If something goes wrong (read the other reviews about this place) you feel so isolated and you just sit around until someone replies to your text.  I was very disappointed with the whole concept, but my husband found it for me and I was visiting my elderly father in a nursing home in the area.  I would not stay here again.  Walking up the pathway, then steps, in the dark was dangerous.  I think they should suggest you always have a torch with you if you stay there.  There were leaves piled up in front of the doorway so I cleared those away to get in.  I would say that they need to be more personally involved in their business.  I could not recommend it to anyone.  I used to write reviews for a 'Singles' magazine and I reviewed places - I would give this a 2 or 3 out of 10, for the danger of getting to your room in the first place!  I don't like anonymous reviews and I would have been happy to talk to the owners, if I knew who they were, but this anonymous texting is unbusinesslike and quite frankly, I can't be bothered with it.  I was looking forward to it, it looks so nice in the promotions material, but what a disappointment.  Too many things wrong - needs a lot of updating.  It is not a Quaint cottage - it is a run-down area that needs a lot of updating.

Its dingy, old, could do with a total redecoration sympathetic with the age of the property.   We were in the area for a wedding, and had to contact the wedding venue, to ask if we could hire one of their rooms for a few hours, to enable us to get ready, do makeup etc.  The Steindorf has very little lighting, is more like a film set for an old fashioned 'bush' film.  God knows what was living outside, as the garden area hasn't had attention for decades.  Its useless trying to get in touch with the owners, as its all run by remote control, for some office that cannot be located.  Don't pay your money upfront.  Once they have it, all contact with them is lost, if you have any kind of problem   Don't go near it!!
