Hunter Valley YHA - Hostel

We stayed here for 2 nights in a family room. Great size room and ensuite. Very new, clean, fresh. FANTASTIC linen - I know, I know, not that exciting, but by 'backpacker' standards, bedding, towels etc were a very pleasant surprise. Great kitchen facilities, as well as bbq's. The best thing for us was the outdoor space, complete with volleyball court and sporting equipment for us to all let loose with after a day in the car. There's a pool here too, but WAY too cold right now. All in all, highly recommended for families and anyone in general.

Great place to stay when you want to explore Hunter Valley. The rooms are clean and cosy, with an amazing views. There is communal area with well equipped kitchen, car parc, barbeque area and a swimming pool. You can rent bicycles and go for a ride amongst beautiful countryside. Nigel, who works there, is really helpful and informative. I would highly recommend all the backpacker to go and visit an other side of Australia (not just coast and beaches).

The YHA is located on a 20 acre property with its own vineyards. It's quiet and spacious, and we would often hear the sounds of birds as we had our tea and snacks out on the verandah. It was the kind of YHA that you could hang out in. 
We hired a family room which came with a double bed and 3 single bunk beds. The room was clean and we were provided with sheets and blankets. We had our own bathroom with bath towels. The kitchen was clean and spacious. The only drawback were the public bathroom facilities. There are two toilets and two showers for the entire hostel. The hosts live in a house next to the hostel and they were very friendly. All in all, I had a really nice stay and I would come back.

Perfect Family Set Up

Great base to explore Hunter Valley

A pleasant surprise

Things I liked:
- cleanliness of room, bathroom and the rest of the premises
- heating in all the spaces
- tv with cartoons for my child in the common room
- impeccable clean kitchen
- polite reception staff (Nigel)
- how peaceful and quiet it was... we loved it.

Things I didn't like:
- claiming 'free wifi' when it's only for 30 mins with a docket issued by receptionist, and I was not told that's how it works... Most places give wifi for the entire time if they claim it's 'free' - you just sign into their network... Not here.
- Nigel wasn't at reception in the evening/morning when we were there, so every time you need to speak to him, you have to ring the bell and he has to come from his house - it feels like you're bothering him... It made me feel uncomfortable.
- the heater in the room wasn't very efficient, it made warm the area immediately next to it but not the rest of the room...
- the price is quite high for this type of basic accommodation, in my view.
- the main light in the room is a long fluorescent bulb, which is very office-like, very harsh... When one is on holidays, one likes to relax, so softer lighting would be nicer, I think... Fortunately, there was a bedside lamp to use instead, but even that had a harsh light.

one-nighter in YHA

The nice thing about this hostel is that you get that great "cabin in the mountain" feeling due to its wooden structure and the owner's super nice. The facilities are very new and in top shape. I stayed there in 40 degree weather and that really was a struggle as the rooms are not air-conditioned and you can't create a draught as window & door are on the same wide (and the mattresses have a plastic cover which makes you steam even more).

A bit a mixed bag

We were misguided by good comments and rating as ****

Room with double bed extremely small for 2 adults and 2 suitcases. Nothing to place some items or luggage. Bathroom extremly small as well without glass or plastic cup. 
Heating is a small electric wall plate - it's senseless when cold outside.Internet is for 30 mins  only then 3 $/day.

View is onto  some horses and the wine plants.

Everything is charged extra. We paid 105 $ for one night. Sorry that's very much to much. Backpackers may be happy we weren't.
