Airwalk Lodge - Hostel

We arrive at Tahune air walk carpark and discovered our rent a car had just gotten a flat tyre.  Tahune is located in an area with no mobile phone coverage.  The people at reception were particularly helpful allowing us to use their phone to call for roadside assistance and suggesting they lend us an air pump or get one of the staff to change the tyre for us.  Very big thanks to Heather at reception and Chris who changed the tyre while we enjoyed the air walk.  A truly fantastic experience, both the people and the beautiful surrounding forrest.

We stayed in the Tahune Cabin - Nice little house. We booked for 5 people however there were only beds for 4 people and a very small 2 person couch. This meant that one of us had to sleep on the floor which was very uncomfortable. It was very hard to find the gate surrounding the cabin to get into the house and as we arrived after hours we were struggling to get into our lodging. There is also hardly any reception here which made asking for help difficult. After some help from those staying in the lodge we managed to get in.
There is adequate cooking facilities and wifi (although to access the wifi you must be near the visitor centre). It was very nice being able to do the walk at sunset and see the place after dark - Pack a few torches! 

If you love going for walks and marvel at the nature around you.....this is the place. Close to the Huon river and the Tahune Skywalk, it's a beautiful location. Accommodation is basic, shared lounge rooms, shared bathrooms, but it was clean and tidy. This is the perfect place for a big family (or families) to connect with nature. Check in was quick and easy, staff was very friendly. Bonus when staying at the Lodge, you get free entry to the park and skywalk.

Tahune Lodge was a great place for a one-nighter. I highly recommend it for the convenience alone as it's right next to the airwalks, visitor centre and cafe.

I'm normally not a fan of shared accommodation, but my partner and I were lucky enough to only be sharing the lodge with one other friendly stranger. I basically had the whole women's shower, washroom and toilets to myself! The room itself (double room) was pretty small, but the bed was quite large and comfy. If you can store your luggage and belongings underneath the bed the room's not too bad.

The kitchen was fully stocked and everything was quite clean. I found my stay in the lodge to actually be quite comfy and cosy. There's nothing like enjoying a roaring fire whilst listening to the rain outside. Keep in mind there's no reception there but there's plenty to do and look at outside.

We had breakfast at the cafe the next morning and the staff were very warm and friendly. I actually had my only decent coffee on my whole visit to Tasmania there. I'd recommend trying the cafe if you can't be bothered driving out of the forest and back.

The only reservation I had was with the water- it has a natural orange/rust colouration that comes from tannins. It's apparently safe to drink but the colour may put some people off.

Convenient location

The best way to do the Tahune Airwalk and the lesser walks in the area is to arrive the night before and stay overnight for an early start.  Accommodation options are few, but the lodge offers a safe and comfortable bed for the night.  Very basic but not primitive, needs self-catering skills and don't expect too much.  Better than simple back-packing.  If arriving after the kiosk closes, be sure you know how to get in the locked key safe.  We only shared with one other couple, but if it is full the shared lounge/kitchen/dining and ablutions areas might get a bit crowded. Tahune is 90km and 90 minutes from Hobart - the round trip turns the journey into a long day.  Staying overnight adds to the fun and gives the option of a night walk on the Airwalk.  Remember the kiosk is only open for limited hours.
