Southdown Stable

We stayed in Southdown stables and were amazed at how beautiful the place was, so much character and attention to detail. Loving the vintage pieces in the cottage. We definitely want to return and stay again, wished we stayed longer as we only arrived Friday night and went home Sunday afternoon. We used the master bedroom with en-suite bathroom, bed was so comfortable, I slept like a log. Bath was so relaxing. P.S, Thank you for the wine!

Boy did I do well choosing the Devon Long Barn !!!  It is one of the best accommodations we have stayed in, and we have stayed in many. It is so gorgeous....from the first glimpse you get in the trees, to the warm and cosy feeling you get as soon as you open the door. Margaret thought of every little touch to make our stay perfect. There is a king size bed, extremely comfy and warm, a fully equipped kitchen, dining, lounge area and a wonderful bathroom with a huge bath. Lamps, flowers, cushions, music.....the list goes on. Breakfast provisions are a lovely inclusion also. Now to the gardens.....stunning to say the least. There is a beautiful courtyard and garden off the cottage where we had a cuppa every afternoon, and the very large formal gardens were a complete delight. Garden room after garden room.......so relaxing! We are going to go back soon and make it our mini getaway every so often. It is a slice of heaven. No negatives.......and a thousand positives.

We had a two night stay in 'The Stables' that was centrally heated with comfortable 2 b/r and 2 bathrooms .
Two fridges and all the necessary kitchen appliances made life enjoyable along with the slow combustion wood heater (extra cost for the wood).
Convenient to the centre of Bowral with a short taxi ride for our Saturday night restaurant meal plus an easy drive to Berrima and wineries.
Lovely grounds to walk around in  once the rain had dissipated.

I stayed in Devon cottage and really liked it's rustic style with dozens of historic knick-knacks - even in hidden places like dresser drawers.  The downstairs kitchen/living area is compact but cosy for a couple. The dimensions, timber beams and steep stairs gave me the impression of being below decks in a small sailing vessel!  But with an open fire and full bath.
The breakfast provisions were basic, except for the eggs which were the best I have ever had.  I did not choose this place for the garden setting but I was impressed during my exploratory walks and appreciated the distance and seclusion from the nearest houses.  
I failed to read the arrival instructions and had trouble finding the right driveway arriving after dark. I ended up on the phone with Margaret who talked me through it even though she was off site at the time.  
Southern highlands accommodation is expensive but the last minute rates I paid were okay and I would stay again at a similar rate.

We had a lovely three nights in Southdown Cottage over the New Year period. Margaret, the owner and host, made check in very easy and dropped by the following morning to make sure everything was ok, giving us some great recommendations for local food. The cottage is so cosy and beautifully decorated - we loved the feel of the place, particularly the window seat big enough for two. Margaret has thought of everything, with lots of nice touches like the breakfast basket, bathrobes, toiletries, and plenty of towels. The grounds are extensive and we enjoyed playing badminton on the lawn. The location is also great - we had a car with us to get around but hired a taxi one day knowing a few drinks would be had at lunch. The outdoor space allocated to the cottage wasn't quite as private/comfortable as we would have liked but only a minor issue. We would love to come back at some stage in the winter to test out the beautiful fireplace.

The Southdown property (just south of Bowral, NSW) is a lovely space with several cottages on the grounds. We stayed at the Southdown Stables, a two-bedroom, two-bathroom renovated stable. The rooms were generous in size, the bathrooms fitted out with tasteful, modern amenities and the rest of the cottage largely in keeping with mid-19th century furnishings (beds, wardrobes, etc) There was a fireplace and central heating. Fresh eggs, bread, cereal, milk, tea and coffee were all included in our stay. Guests are invited to explore the grounds of the property which are nicely kept, with several spots to sit and contemplate. There were a few chickens wandering about too.

We stayed at Southdown Stable with our friends, and whilst each couple had their own bathroom, the very rustic approach was not the cleanest of places I have stayed. The bathrooms were update and good sizes. The bedrooms were reasonable size for only two.
The kitchen and lounge areas were cluttered with lots of nicknacks and lack of light. There were sky tube lights but the lens were full of dust and dead flies. The nicknacks were dusty and and the timber kitchen bench was in need of a massive rejuvenation.
Saying that breakfast was supplied is a long stretch of a bow. Small packs of Corn Flakes and WeetBix, and four eggs and a loaf of bread and a cartoon of milk. Not much for four people over two mornings. Coffee and tea consisted of a number of different types of tea bags that are ok if your not only a black tea drinker.
The gardens that you are encouraged to explore by your host, Margaret, were a poorly maintained. In some parts they should provide a mower or machete to give you access. Considering we were there in Autumn all garden beds were over grown and looked like they had not been tended too at all over the summer period.
Generally the whole property needs a massive cleanup. Not hard if you truly want to provide a weekend escape experience.
Disappointment with our accommodation did not dampen our weekend in the Southern Highlands.
