The hotel is damage, old and poor kinda 1978. 

The staff are the best and they try to give you the best they could. Unfortunately is not enough.

Perfect: location

Good: bathroom / hot water / clean/ breakfast = normal
Bad: the building is in ruins

Worst: safety, not air cond / old TB w/ control



Not enough but 

We stayed here over 3 years ago and didn't hesitate to book again.  We found the hotel to be very much the same - a bit rough around the edges in terms of decor etc but the staff were again fantastic.  Housekeeping, laundry and all other hotel services were 100%.  Beds are comfortable, all rooms have new TVs and everything was kept spotlessly clean. The price was much cheaper than other accommodation options in the area. We are hoping to return to Buenos Aires next year and will be booking again.

Great return stay!

Since the Bauen went banckrupt in the 1990 and was taken over later by a cooperative, no maintenance, not even paintwork, was done. Out of 3 elevators only one works. In this one I got stuck between two floors, and there was no emergency button to call for help (afterwards this one was out of order as well, so we had to walk 9 floors, or wait for the freight elevator, a model from the 1930ies I guess). 
The carpets are blotchy and dirty (walk up to the first floor, you will know what I mean), and the plaster falls off the walls. Some dark hair were in the bathroom the whole stay - and I dont have black hair - and the drains were 
constantly clogged. 
Unless you are a social romatic and want to support the cooperative, don't consider staying in there - a 2 star hostal offers more comfort. 
It is a ruin, I really cant understand why it is listed still as 4-star hotel.

A 4-star hotel? A 5-star nightmare!

After sending another group to stay at the Bauen it is evident that this property is still wonderful for those seeking to put their money where their ideals and solidarity inspires.  The service at the hotel for years has been supportive and caring. If you come with humor and a humble heart you will be happy. Engage the staff and learn. They will share.   For those with expectations of comfort and gourmet breakfast the Bauen will absolutely disappoint you. My last group suffered a torrential storm and the rooms were very uncomfortable with the drafts and plumbing issues.  Thus manage your expectations before  you go, and if you stay be generous. This property has a ton of potential and is in need of a loving cash infusion.

Go for Solidarity, Love the Service, and "weather" the conditions

I was attracted to this place as it´s a worker run hotel but that´s where the romance ended.  This hotel is in desperate need of a huge cash injection.  The lifts were scary.  I got stuck in one of them almost everyday and there was always one out of service.  My room was extremely dated and there was water from the upstairs bathroom dripping through my ceiling and onto the table missing my laptop by a whisker.  This leak caused the electrics to blow on more than one occasion.  I spoke to other guests and they too where experiencing the same problems and had been given hand held lights for their rooms as they had no electricity at all.  The quality of breakfast was poor.  The bread was stale everyday and the mini pastries where of terrible quality.  The coffee gave me acid indigestion, something I don´t usually suffer from. I found most of the staff apathetic although the two main guys on reception were really friendly and helpful.  I´d really like for this place to work given that it´s a cooperative hotel but right now it´s a far cry from what it should be for the money.
